KCETLink Steps Out with ‘City Walk’: A NewTransmedia Series

An original multi-media series explores the growingeffort to utilize public walkable spaces in major cities across the country tobecome less vehicle-dependent

 As the nation continues to grow accustomed to a society with little physical movement and exercise in the last century, the rise of health conditions such as obesity,diabetes, high blood pressure and depression have been looming side effects.  KCET Link has announced the premiere of City Walk, a new multi-media series that captures a rising nationwide effort to reverse this trend, spotlighting walkable neighborhoods in major cities, and inspiring viewers to explore urban areas by foot.

Launched on KCET Thursday, May 2 at 10 p.m. and on Link TV Thursday, May 9 at 8:30EST/5:30 PSD, this unique six-part series reveals the way walking is transforming cities across America, and in the process, re-connecting us with our bodies.

“We are excited to be able to offer an innovative multi-faceted series to our viewers and invite them to explore their public urban landscape with multiple engagement opportunities on the air,online and beyond,” said Juan Devis, Vice President, Arts and Culture Programming for KCET Link. “We are pleased to help shepherd urban exploration into the public consciousness through walking, and encourage a healthier lifestyle.”

“After working for two years on collecting these inspirational stories from across the country, we are proud to bring this national conversation about walking to the KCET Link audience,”added Thomas Rigler, Executive Producer, CityWalk. ”The show has been an incredible journey, and we are eager to have the viewers now join us.”

The first season of City Walk features 30-minute episodes exploring various aspects of pedestrian life in cities including: Los Angeles,Portland, Boston, Atlanta, Washington D.C. and New York. Each episode offers inspiring stories centered on the health and biology of walking, historical perspectives on how our society settled into a sedentary lifestyle and the positive impact walking can make in peoples’ lives.

As the show explores the “walkability”of communities within each metropolis, viewers will learn about American history by exploring culturally rich neighborhoods, stunning architecture,monuments and beautiful parks that have helped define the character of each city.

The multi-platform series will engage audiences beyond television and also permeate online, mobile, tablets, social networks and communal activism across urban landscapes.  The series features a vibrant online destination at kcet.org/citywalk where visitors can stream full episodes, find show segments, web extras, related news, and tap into additional resources on how walking can change your life.

The series premiered at Digital Hollywood on Tuesday, April 30 at 6 p.m. at the Ritz Carlton in Marina del Rey, Calif., with filmmakers and the series’ executive producers in attendance.

Growing up in South Central, Los Angeles, California took its toll on Joseph Collins Jr. Gang violence and drug ridden streets were a daily battle for the Collins family as they ventured out into their work and school lives. At the age of ten, Joseph’s mother decided to uproot her family and move them to the safer neighborhoods of Pomona, California where Joseph essentially grew up. Money was tight, forcing the family to rely on food stamps and other government assistance just to get by. Although there were many struggles growing up, Joseph emerced himself in learning and creativity.

A native Angeleno from South Central, Joseph Collins looks back on his childhood with fondness and accredits his parents as the most influential people in his life. Joseph knew at an early age that he was born for television. The Three Stooges, Speed Racer and The Addams Family were among the many shows that lit the spark inside this future Television CEO, knowing that one day he would be developing and producing top notch shows like the ones he grew up watching. Gary High School in Pomona, California was the developmental grounds for Joseph’s future as the founder of Punch Television Network. Here he was heavily influenced by his high school teacher, Barbara Barkermeyer, who opened doors for him to gain his first Hollywood audition.  Persistence paid off when, after months of calling, Joseph landed an internship with WVTV in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.  His flare and contagious personality helped him grow from an intern to working as the youngest news anchor to report the business news, drawing people in to hear his take on the daily events.

Many people have influenced and shaped Joseph’s role in the television world, from J.W. Witt former CEO of WVTV in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the story of William Paley, founder of CBS, to Michael Eisner, former CEO of Disney John Malone and Ted Turner the cable industries trailblazer. These men have inspired Joseph and helped keep him focus on achieving his dream of owning and operating a television network, which has since become a reality.

The CEO and founder of Punch TV Network, Joseph Collins has been recognized as the “Entrepreneur of the Year” presented by the California Legislative Assembly.  He has also been notably recognized by United States Senator Dianne Feinstein, congratulating him on his excellence in Entrepreneurship, superior leadership, dedication and perseverance.

Joseph’s ultimate goal has come to fruition by bringing life-changing, inspirational television to viewers throughout the world. During his 30 years in television production and programming, Joseph has accumulated a long list of accomplishments. Along with the production of over 600 TV commercials to his credit, Mr. Collins has received recognitions for his vision. Specifically, Mr. Collins was presented with the 1996 Entrepreneur of the Year Award by Senator Diane Feinstein, Senator Fred Aguilar, and Senator Barbara Boxer. Additionally, he has received accolades from City Council members. His rich entrepreneurial spirit and accomplishments has led to the creation of Punch TV.

DR. GLORIA MONTGOMERY (CARE 4 KIDS – ALL STAR CELEBRITY EVENT)

As the Hi-Lites they released a number of singles on local labels then in 1964 they changed their name to Marshall & the Chi-Lites; the ‘C’ being added to reflect the name of their hometown, Chicago.  By the end of 1964 Clarence Johnson had left the group and they truncated their name to simply the Chi-Lites.  During the ensuing four years Eugene Record slowly emerged as the group’s lead singer, songwriter and producer.

In 1969, after signing with Brunswick the previous year, “Give It Away” became their first USA national hit single attaining number ten in the R&B charts.  The follow-up release “Let Me Be The Man My Daddy Was” was moderately successful but another major hit was elusive until “Are You My Woman ?” climbed into the R&B top ten in early 1971.  A succession of top ten hits followed commencing with their next release “(For God’s Sake)Give More Power To The People” which was the first release to crossover into the pop charts.  The ballads “Have You Seen Her” and “Oh Girl” followed, both reaching number one in the R&B charts with “Oh Girl” also achieving the number one slot in the pop charts in the spring of 1972.

He started as DJ in 1983, inspired by the real old skool disco, funky r&b soul jazz grooves of the 70′s & 80′s.inspired By Top Producers & Songwriters In the 90′s he became one of the first DJ’s to present live his famous special MASTER MIX RADIO SHOW on swiss national radio. One of the most creative around the mix, his special scratch sampled effects, put in the mix with four turntables.

As the Resident DJ at such popular swiss clubs like: Peter Pan, the club(OXA), MAD, La Scala,Nachtwerk,etc. A lot of stars like INCOGNITO, IMAGINATION, JOCELYNE BROWN, INNOCENT, TONY SCOTT etc. came as guests to play with him in the best time of the nightlife of Zurich. The leader of the famous 2 DJ’s AT WORK joined by european House Music DJ N-JOY has recorded as the TWO OLD SKOOL BOYZ, TOO STRONG; DJ N-JOY & DJ FRANKIE FRANK Project, 2 DJ’s AT WORK and many more….He remixes songs for world famous music stars.
DJ N-JOY went the first time in a disco in 1978 with his older sisters. There he got the inspiration of the disco music. In 1981 he received a part as an actor, together with his two sisters, in the movie “Zürich Abseits” of the well-known swiss director, ANDREAS HONEGGER.

At the beginning of the 90′s, he began as producer of music. He produced from underground to very successful tracks for DJ’s. In 2000 he produced and remixed the famous italian group SQUALLOR. He is also the author of the world-famous “Pump it Up” performed by DANZEL.

In 1996 he created his own Record Label DC RECORDS PRODUCTION. In 1998 he started together with his partner DJ FRANKIE FRANK the 2 DJ’s AT WORK for the Italian Superstar JOE T VANNELLI.

Actually DJ N-JOY started his new project with the famous SNAP singer PENNY FORD. The Original SNAP Singer (THE POWER) And also today they were nominated as the most famous group of the 90′s. The new smash hit “When we rise” is coming!

Music is an international language, and Blues and Jazz are America’s classical music. Join my friends from various countries and me for an exciting and inspiring week of Jazz, Blues, and Gospel music.

The 1st International Blues, Jazz, Folk and Gospel Festival was held at the LVH hotel in Las Vegas, from March 24 till March 31, 2013.

Every day at 3 PM, there was a Gospel show. The evenings from 8 PM on were devoted to Blues and Jazz music.

From March 25 till March 28, there was also a Free Authentic American Music Workshop Gospels and More for the children and students of the Clark County School District.

The workshop was from 9 AM till 11 AM from Monday through Thursday in the LVH Convention Center with a performance on March 31.

We take a trip through the times in her life and we recap some memories about touring around the world working together!

 The strikingly beautiful Freda Charcelia Payne was born in Detroit, Michigan on September 9th, 1942. And her road to The DiscoMuseum has many twists and turns along it’s way. Besides her singing career, she is a noted film and stage actress as well as a former talk show host.   Freda developed her love of music at an early age. She cites Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan and Billie Holliday as her earliest influences. Her own career began as a jingles singer which brought the young vocalist to the attention of several music-biz heavyweights. At the age of 17, Pearl Bailey gave Payne her first professional job. Berry Gordy Jr. attempted to sign Payne to his then-burgeoning record company, Motown, and Duke Ellington employed Payne as the featured singer with his renowned orchestra for two nights in Pittsburgh, resulting in Ellington offering the teenager a ten-year contract. But in both cases, Freda’s mother turned them down.

During the early to mid-1960′s, Payne established herself as a top-notch jazz vocalist, touring the country with legends like Lionel Hampton, Sammy Davis Jr., Billy Eckstein, and Quincy Jones. The late Jazz impresario Bob Thiele (husband of the late Teresa Brewer) gave Payne her first recording session. Like all those that heard Freda sing he was undoubtedly impressed, so much so that he personally produced the sessions for her 1963 release ”After The Lights Go Down” on his own Impulse label. The album is a mixed bag of big band numbers and jazz combo standards. Wedged between her beautiful version of “‘Round Midnight” and Ornette Coleman’s ”Lonely Woman” is “Blue Piano.” Impressive to consider that Duke Ellington wrote the song specifically for this session.

There is an incredible wealth of material here, and it definitely shows just how diverse and indeed brilliant Freda Payne can be. The contributions of top-drawer jazz musicians such as pianist Walter Perkins, guitarist Jim Hall and alto saxophonist Phil Woods give this a polished sound. The album has been re-issued on compact disc and is still available.   Touring and establishing her jazz career followed the next several years. She headlined with “The Smart Affairs Revue” and the ”The Larry Steel Show” hitting spots from Atlantic City to Vegas and Hawaii. By 1966 she was poised for another album release. Her sophomore album was released on MGM records and has long been out of print. “How Do You Say I Don’t Love You Anymore?” was another classic mix of jazz and standards. Benny Golson, composer of such hits as “Killer Joe” and “I Remember Clifford” arranged and conducted. Tom Wilson produced. The stellar standouts are her renditions of “Yesterday,” “Let It Be Me,” “Feeling Good” and “On Easy Street.” The album elevated her status amongst the jazz and supper club crowds but did not make her a commercial success.

Freda enjoyed further exposure via appearances on the Johnny Carson, David Frost, and Merv Griffin shows. But it wasn’t until Payne signed on to the Invictus label in 1969 (headed by longtime friends/former Motown songwriters and producers Eddie Holland, Lamont Dozier, and Brian Holland) and issued the album “Band Of Gold” that she scored her breakthrough hit. The album’s title track, peaked at #-3 in the U.S. and topped the charts in the U.K. in 1970. The first single was “The Unhooked Generation” but it was her second single, the ambiguous wedding-night drama, “Band Of Gold” that made soul history. The album is chocked full of delicious gems like the third single “Deeper & Deeper” and “This Girl Is A Woman Now,” “The Easiest Way To Fall” and “Love On Borrowed Time.” The album went to #-17 (R&B) and #-60 (Pop) on Billboards charts and earned her a Gold album. It surely gave Invictus a positive cash flow to broaden it’s roster and further it’s catalogue.

Freda’s second Invictus album was a significant success, making it higher onto the Billboard charts than her first release. She found her niche in the early 1970′s, doing silky, sophisticated pop/soul with excellent production, arrangements, and material supplied by the Holland/Dozier/Holland team. They wisely chose not to make her a sassy or hard-edged vocalist, but putting her voice in a string and horn-dominated genre and emphasizing her soothing, yet lightly sensual side. The “Contact” album came complete with scandal by being banned from the U.S. Armed Forces Radio Network. Seems the hit single “Bring The Boys Home” didn’t sit well with the pro-war radio program.

Although much of Freda’s association with the mighty Invictus label would be fraught with stress, it was nevertheless a prolific period with masterpieces of epic proportions. The masterpieces on “Contact” are obviously “Bring The Boys Home,” “You Brought The Joy,” “You’ve Got To Love Somebody” and “I Shall Not Be Moved.” Thankfully Sequel Records has combined her first two Invictus albums on to one compact disc reissue.   Despite it’s sexy cover with the bikini-clad Payne frolicking on the beach, “Reaching Out” was to be her third and final album of original material for Invictus. A “Best Of” was issued in 1973. The single “Two Wrongs Don’t Make A Right” struggled to #-75 on the R&B charts and signaled the end of her pop/commercial success. Her version of “Rainy Days & Mondays” is yet another example of her incredible range and depth and makes the album worth the purchase alone.

1974 was a pivotal year for Payne. MGM Records re-released “How Do I Say I Don’t Love You Anymore?” as part of their “Golden Archives Series.” And she fled Invictus for the more successful and polished ABC/Dunhill Records. Her debut for the new label was a masterpiece. “Payne & Pleasure” was a polished pop effort. Her versions of “I Won’t Last A Day (Without You),”The Way We Were” and “A Song For You” are worthy of comparison to the Carpenters and Barbra Streisand’s versions. The original cuts: “Run For Your Life,” “Don’t Wanna Be Left Out,” “It’s Yours To Have” and “I Get Carried Away” are unique unto themselves. The album peaked at #-55 on the Billboard charts and earned her a whole new legion of fans.   Her sophomore release for ABC/Dunhill however didn’t fare as well.

1975′s “Out Of Payne Comes Love” failed to chart as an LP. And only one single, “It’s Yours To Have,” peaked at #-81 on Billboard’s R&B charts. The album in retrospect comes off as a hodgepodge of scattered material and arrangements. Whatever the album lacks in production coordination at least it has Payne’s stunning vocals. As gifted as a singer as she is, she still needs quality material. Songs like ”Million Dollar Horse” just don’t cut it. The real gem of the album is her version of “You Brought The Woman Out In Me.” This sultry disco number was a minor club hit. With a remixed 12″ it could have been a monster hit. As with most labels, her poor chart showing and lackluster sales caused her to be dropped by ABC records after only two albums.   The next few years saw a rapid shift in music from soul/pop to disco. Payne spent those years touring and doing television appearances. But by 1977 she was poised to record another album.

Enter Capitol records and Motown alumnus Frank Wilson and Tony Camillo to produce her disco masterpiece ”Stares And Whispers.” The well known track is obviously the 12″ single of ”Love Magnet.” But the overlooked “Master Of Love” gets my vote as the real treasure. Starting off as a slow seductive number about 3-4 minutes in it turns into a killer high energy toe-tapper. Other disco numbers are “Feed Me Your Love” and “Bring Back The Joy.” The latter co-written by former school teacher and 1990′s R&B star Gregory Abbott. 1977 was a key year in Freda’s life. Surviving the death of her beloved mother was a low point. The highlights were her new label, album and discocareer as well as the birth of her first son in October. The 35 year old beauty had never looked or sounded better. Motherhood and disco agreed with her. 1978 was another banner year for Freda, besides her marriage to husband Gregory Abbott, she gave birth to her second son, Gregory Abbott Jr. Her second disco album release, “Supernatural High,” spawned more club favorites.

Besides the 12″ single hits “Happy Days Are Here Again/Happy Music (Dance The Night Away” and “I’ll Do Anything For You” the album had the noteworthy tracks: “Just The Thought Of You (Supernatural High)” and “Storybook Romance.” The latter was written by little sister Scherrie Payne who would include her version of it on her 1979 Motown release “Partners” with Susaye Greene. This album marks the first, but not the last, time the sisters would collaborate.   With her third Capitol records release, ”Hot,” it rivaled her Invictus years for volume of output. Once again she scored another club hit with the 12″ single “Red Hot.” Despite a variety of well produced numbers, including the other club favorite “Gotta Keep Dancing,” the album failed to ignite any sales and quickly disappeared.

As 1979 was the pinnacle for disco and it’s death was looming on the horizon Freda began considering other avenues of creative expression. She continued touring and making personal appearances, but took more time to spend with her children and husband. The next several years found her raising a family, struggling with a divorce and starting a new career as a talk show hostess. Her 1981 talk show ”Today’s Black Woman” was short lived. I did catch an episode where she interviewed her sister Scherrie Payne, which I found quite interesting.   After the demise of her talk show Freda hit the studios again. First for her own release “In Motion.” A spunky number on the small independent label Sutra that received moderate club play. The song was written and produced by Edmund Sylvers (with whom she had a brief affair despite their 15 year age gap). And secondly as part of the “Stars On Background” for sister Scherrie’s mega-hit ”Girl, You’re In Love/I’m Not In Love” both in1982.

In 1986 she re-recorded “Band Of Gold” with former Go-Go, Belinda Carlisle for Carlisle’s debut album. The 12″ single was a huge success. Besides her celluloid stint as talk show hostess and a 1988 video release of “Legendary Ladies Of Rock And Roll” she was pretty low-keyed in the 1980′s.   In 1990 she started a comeback of sorts. She appeared as a backing vocalist on Nancy Wilson’s ”Lady With A Song” compact disc. And Ian Levine coaxed her into recording a remake of “Band Of Gold” for his MotorCity label, which is undoubtedly a very “dated” sounding remake.

Freda had dabbled in acting early in her career. Her first movie role was in 1973′s blaxplotation film ”Book Of Numbers” which starred a pre-“Miami Vice” Phillip Michael Thomas. In 1976 she won favorable reviews for her appearance on an episode of “Police Story” entitled “$.50 First Half-Hour, $1.75 All Day.” In the 1990′s she decided to move to another phase of her career as an actress. She played a boutique sales director in the 1995 thriller “Private Obsession.” She played a vocalist in Tisha Campbell’s 1997 hit-movie “Sprung.” Next came the role of “Gran” in the 1999 horror film “Ragdoll.”

Then came a prized role alongside Janet Jackson and Eddie Murphy in the 2000 release “Nutty Professor 2: The Klumps,” her funniest work to date. In 2001 she was seen as “Jean Aimes” in the made-for-T.V. film “Fire And Ice” and appeared alongside Ice-T and M.C. Hammer in the music business thriller ”Deadly Rhapsody” as “Lily Potter.” In 2006 she appeared with her son Greg Abbott Jr. in the television sci-fi horror film “Saurian” as “Sylvia Madson” and starred in 2007′s “Cordially Invited” as ”Ann Sheffield.” She has amassed a nice body of work for a singer turned actress. But Payne has not abandoned her recording career, in fact, she enjoyed a resurgence in the 1990′s with her releases.

Her 1995 release, “Freda Payne Sings the (Unauthorized) I Hate Barney Songbook: A Parody” was her first since her Sutra 12″ single three years earlier. What can be said about the Dove Records compact disc? The title says it all! The next year her release of “An Evening With Freda Payne Live In Concert” brought her back to her glory days. The 19 track extravaganza features stunning numbers like “C’Est Si Bon,” “Take The A-Train,” “It Don’t Mean A Thing, “Don’t Rain On My Parade” and of course her hits “Band Of Gold” and ”Bring The Boys Home.” Freda looks and sounds more incredible than ever! For this concert recording she brought in sister Scherrie and former Tony Orlando And Dawn star Joyce Vincent-Wilson. Joyce dragged in her sister Pamela Vincent to round out the backing trio. This makes the recording a unique ”Sister Act.” 

Later that same year Freda tackled new ground by recording her first Christmas album. ”Christmas With Freda And Friends” is a delightful release. All the usual holiday standards are here. “The Christmas Song,” “Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas,” “Silver Bells” and “O Holy Night/Silent Night.” The new material includes gems like “What Is Christmas To You?” and “The Perfect Time Of The Year” (which Freda wrote). Two unusual classics are here as well. Covers of Eartha Kitt’s “Santa Baby” and the late Donny Hathaway’s “This Christmas.” The “Friends” are Cuba Gooding, Mel Carter, O.C. Smith and Carolyn Willis. Remember her? She was the female voice on the Seals & Crofts hit “Get Closer.” And of course what would a holiday be without family……sister Scherrie’s here as well. All in all a nice holiday package that is still in-print.

1999′s “Live In Concert” is a recording of a live performance that Payne made in Los Angeles on November 6th, 1993. It is actually an edited version of the live album “An Evening With Freda Payne: Live in Concert.” This release contains the medley of “Who Can I Turn To/Didn’t We” that was not on the previous release. When Freda signed with the reactivated Volt label in 2000, many of her die hard soul lovers were no doubt hoping for an album of Detroit soul and Holland/Dozier/Holland classics. But the veteran singer is more versatile than that.   Released in 2001, ”Come See About Me” contains only a few examples of retro soul. “First Impression” and the title track (a cover of The Supremes’ 1964 smash) recall her soul output of the 1970′s, but the CD also offers everything from urban and quiet storm to adult contemporary.

Payne (who was 57 when this album was recorded) even gets back into dance-pop on the anthemic “I Live For New York City.” None of the material is straight-ahead jazz, although ”Let’s Make Beautiful Music,” “You Complete Me,” and an arrangement of the standard “You Turned The Tables On Me” are the sort of mellow quiet storm offerings that one would expect from Anita Baker. The album shows that like a fine wine Payne only gets more mellow and beautiful as time goes by. It also demonstrates her ability to be both progressive and yet classic simultaneously. Her latest release “On The Inside” is available in her store via her web site.   We’re happy to see that this legend is still going strong in the new millennium.

In early 2003, she performed in a show called ”Love & Payne,” with Darlene Love at Feinstein’s at the Regency in New York, and at the Cinegrill in the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel in Los Angeles, getting excellent reviews. On April 22nd, 2009 Freda appeared on “American Idol” and sang her smash “Band of Gold.” And in February 2010, Freda joined Kanye West, Jordan Sparks, Jennifer Hudson, Barbra Streisand and many more on the remake of “We Are The World” for Haiti Relief.   She is available for bookings and is very active today. IRINA MALEEVA

Born in Bulgaria the daughter of a famous stage actress and an aristocratic Italian statesman, Irina Maleeva, who speaks seven languages, first established herself as a child performer in Italy.

At age 15, she was discovered by the great Federico Fellini and performed in three of his movies.

By earning degrees in painting and set design from Accademia di Belle Arti in Rome and additional studies at Rome’s Cinecitta Studios and London’s Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, Irina received the training that propelled her into a successful worldwide career in films, television, stage and cabaret, and as a recording artist.

Her motion picture roles have been with the giants of the film industry, including a lead with Orson Welles in “The Merchant of Venice,” and roles in Fellini’s “Satyricon, “Spirits From the Dead” and “Roma.” She also worked with directors Luchino Visconti and Roberto Rossellini. She has played more than 30 leading roles in European and American movies, starring opposite James Mason, Valentina Cortese, Therence Stamp, Anthony Franciosa and Charles Grodin.

Irina was given a supporting actress award by the Toronto Film Festival for her portrayal of a “Demented Contessa” in the film “Union City,” which she also produced, starring singers Debbie Harry and Pat Benetar.

In addition to her film achievements, Irina starred in 14 episodes of the Italian-French co-production TV series “Poly in Venice,” and in “The Girl Without Identity.” She has guest-starred on many American TV series, including “The Gilmore Girls,” “Pensacola: Wings of Gold,” “Just Shoot Me,” “Six Feet Under,” “Cracking Up,” “Angel,” “Threshold,” “Heroes,” “American Body Shop,” “12 Miles of Bad Road,” “Trading Eights” and the daytime dramas “Days of Our Lives” and “The Bold and the Beautiful.”

To fulfill her insatiable desire to perform, Irina has added a unique singing voice to her acting abilities. This has enabled her to travel the world – from New York to Rio to Tokyo – with her one-woman musical comedy shows. Her hits include “Passion, Pain and an Occasional Vodka Tonic” and “Irina A-Broad.”

ANGELES ECHOLS-BROWN

          “Education forms a common mind, when the twig is bent, the tree inclines.”  That quotation emanates from the Deep South, from an era when African-Americans were raised to value education and pass it on with reverence. Angeles Echols continues to honor this tradition.  For more than 20 years, this native of Memphis, Tennessee has been imparting knowledge to students of all creeds, colors, and walks of life; put simply, she’s  ‘educating young minds’ and making sure those twigs grow straight, tall and strong.  What began in her one-room apartment with two children and only $50.00 has blossomed into a multi-faceted and diverse organization that has touched the lives of more than 1,200 students in grades K-12 and their parents.

Angeles Echols knows what it is like to start out life with challenges.  Born and raised in rural Tennessee, Angeles Echols grew up with two sisters and a determined single mother who instilled in each of them the value of discipline, faith, and education.  Much of her childhood was spent growing up in the projects, on welfare, and in an environment where higher education was not an option many young people could hope to attain. Angeles did not let this limit her horizons, she applied to 20 colleges and was accepted into 19.  She chose to attend Cornell University.

          While attending Cornell, Angeles discovered a love for the arts.  She was awarded $5,000 from Willard Straight Hall to produce the musical “An Evening of Soul”.  She directed the gospel choirs on campus and off.  When she was not studying or performing, she was tutoring students locally.  She was always torn between her love for the arts and her love of teaching.  After much prayer and soul-searching, the path was chosen for her.  She would become an advocate for children; she would become an educator.

After moving to Los Angeles, Angeles eventually was offered a teaching position at a small private school, Trinity Lutheran.  Given the success of her class, teachers and parents eagerly sought her assistance. Two students in her one bedroom apartment began what would become Educating Young Minds. Very quickly she discovered the tremendous demand and need in her community, especially among people of color, for supplemental educational and counseling services.  Soon her apartment was filled every day with children, with every part of the apartment in use as an educational facility.   Tera, who graduated from Stanford, would study in the tub (with a pillow) when she was in sixth grade.  Tiphonee, now a senior in high school, would use the toilet (also with a pillow) as her desk. The need for a stand alone facility became clear.  Thus Angeles founded Educating Young Minds Tutorial Program (EYM).

          Educating Young Minds’ aim is to reach at-risk children and their families, channeling their energies toward achieving excellence. This is accomplished by linking high expectations with academic improvement through proven teaching and learning strategies and activities. Educating Young Minds provides a student/teacher ratio of 5:1 to better accommodate students (grades K-12) with different abilities and backgrounds.

Between the hours of 9 a.m. and 10 p.m. Educating Young Minds provides home-study, after-school tutorial, and SAT/ACT prep. EYM also grants $6,000-$10,000 in college scholarships each year to EYM high-school graduates. Ms. Echols and her staff are determined to support, nurture, and guide as many inner-city students as possible.  Former EYM students are now attending or graduating from Stanford, Berkeley, USC, Syracuse University, Xavier, and many others. Ms. Echols is not only committed, sincere and spirit-driven; she’s vivacious, immensely talented, and articulate.

          Angeles years of experience and love for her students prompted her to meet the needs of those students that cannot access EYM but need academic help, want to go to college but are unaware of the requirements, want a career but do not know what it takes, these needs encouraged her to develop a new program entitled, ACCESS/NO EXCUSE. ACCESS/NO EXCUSE is an online-interactive website that provides, tutoring, educational enhancement, career development, and college information to better equip and serve students nationwide. Angeles launched her new website with a three day event that included a festival at West Los Angeles College that allowed children to interact with other children in India, inject themselves into a 3-D model, learn to direct, produce, record, and edit a television show and experience a court trial.

Ms. Echols holds a Bachelors Degree in Psychology, Emphasis in Child Development and Human Behavioral Psychology and completed a one-year graduate program at Cornell in Arts and Sciences.  She has worked as an instructor, tutor, counselor, teacher, and administrator at Harvard’s Upward Bound Program, Chaffey College in Rancho Cucamonga, Trinity Lutheran School in LA, Holy Name’s Multi-Purpose Center in Memphis, and at Alexander Berger Junior High School #139 in the Bronx, to name a few.  She is presently preparing for a PhD program in Education and Child Development and Human Behavior.

          Angeles has been honored by many groups and organizations.  She was recently featured on KTLA (Channel 5) as an “Unsung Hero”. The Los Angeles Times praises her no-nonsense policy in an article titled, “A Tough Love Approach to Tutoring”, in 2003, she was selected to become a member of the President’s Council of Cornell Women and she received the Minorities in Business Magazine’s 2003 PRISM Award in Education. Ms. Echols’ collegiate graduating class most recently selected her as one of the 25 most outstanding graduates of her class. She has also received ACT 1’s Angel of Education Award, Crenshaw Christian Center’s Lifetime Achievement Award, Oscar Joel Bryant’s Community Humanitarian Award, and the Jackie Robinson and United Way’s Community Service Awards. These are some of the many recognitions that adorn the walls of EYM.

At the end of the day, Angeles Echols is one of those rare individuals who are excited not by the many accolades, but rather, the academic and emotional success of her students. Her vision, to create EYM satellite locations, both state and nationwide, is driven by an unquenchable thirst for achievement and support of children, that inspires her peers, students and empowers her parents, molding urban youth, one graduate at a time.

Hip Hop Artist or Rapper. In fact to just call him either, might be as erroneous as a slew of other titles that we generally use to categorize the arts. The best title might simply be: STUDENT (although we regret to burst your bubble and must mention he also holds the position of teacher and motivational speaker). He is a student of life and his unique story is a far cry from the saran wrap packages that most of our “stars” come in.

Forget the fact that a revolution in his home country and multiple transitory stops in other countries somehow landed him here in Orange County, CA. Forget the fact that he speaks at least 4 languages and learned English from the New York/Middle Eastern twanged accents of his father and mother. Even forget about the fact that often more pressing than posting his latest song, booking a show, or hitting the studio, is spending time with his family, loyalty to his dearest friends, and having a cup of tea with his grandma.

Poet is one of those humble and exciting finds that make you want to cross paths with his genius before the rest of the world discovers it. His star has been on the rise for years, and as long as the laws of physicsapply, and the earth is round; It is not “if it will happen” for POET, but “when it will happen”.

JAMES LEARY

James was born in Little Rock, Arkansas. Studied piano and played in Rhythm &Blues bands featuring Teroy Betton, Ben Pruitt , Thomas East, Robert Trezvant, David ii and Jimmy Mayers and York Wilbon around Arkansas. He later became a versatile Bassist performing with Art Porter, Sr. , Albert King , Little Johnny Taylor, Major Lance graduated UAPB      (U of Arkansas, Pine Bluff) BA , Music ED.

In San Francisco studied Bass w/Charles Siani, Ortiz Walton, played with Oakland Symphony/San Francisco Ballet Orchestra, at the same time began a long career as bassist with John Handy, George Duke, Rahsaan Roland Kirk, Dizzy Gillespie, Bobby Hutcherson, Harold Land, Pharoah Sanders, Eddy Jefferson, Esther Phillips, Thelonius Monk, Max Roach, Joe Henderson, Eddy Harris, Randy Weston, Eddy ”Cleanhead” Vinson, Toots Theilman, Anthony Braxton, Oliver Lake, Dewey Redmond, Jon Hendriks, Earl Hines, Count Basie(1982) .

Played Broadway Shows in New York , Los Angeles and San Francisco He moved to Los Angeles(1982), studied film scoring with Albert Harris, scored 2 short films,  joined Sammy Davis Jr. (1984-89), Nancy Wilson(1991-1993). Recorded “DOUBLE BASS Choir cd (w/5 string basses) featuring Al McKibbon, John Clayton.

James rejoined Count Basie Orchestra in 1995 and currently tours the world with Count Basie Orchestra winning 2 Grammy awards along the way!

RADMAN

Radomir Vojtech Luza was born in Vienna, Austria in 1963 to Radomir and Libuse Luza, who escaped Communism in their beloved Czechoslovakia in 1948 to settle in New Orleans. Before escaping, Radomir Sr. had fought in the Czech Underground in WW II alongside his father, General Vojtech Luza, General of the Czech Army and Leader of the Resistance Radomir’s father taught at The University of New Orleans and then Tulane University. Radomir graduated from Jesuit High School in NO and received a BA in English from Tulane University in 1985.

He has had his poetry published in such literary journals as The Aurorean, Sahara, Nerve Cowboy, Spare Change, Bent Pin Quarterly, Seldom Nocturne, New Laurel Review, Poetry Motel, Writers of the Desert Sage, Poet, Anthology, Eintouist, Sage Trail, Phantom Seed, San Gabriel Valley Poetry Quarterly,Skysage (Hon. Mention) and Readers Digest (Hon. Mention) among others. The Boston Globe published one of his poems as have many anthologies, collections and websites.

Radomir has won many Poetry and Writing Awards and is the Publisher of “Voices in the Library” and “California East” Literary Magazines. He is a member of Marquis Who’s Who in America (2003-Present) and Who’s Who in The World (2005-Present). He is also a member of The American Academy of Poets and The Poetry Society of America.  He has written 21 books, of which 17 are Poetry Collections. He has hosted and organized numerous Readings in New York City, Northern NJ and Los Angeles and featured 60 plus times at poetry readings across the country.

DOMA THEATER

DOMA Theatre Co began as a joint venture between two seasoned professionals, Dolf Ramos and Marco Gomez in 2002. In the early stages of the company, DOMA provided a platform to young talent so they could obtain experience in performing in musical theatre productions along with seasoned professionals. As the company grew, it partnered with The Hope & Union Foundation, a California public benefit organization dedicated to the arts and to assisting at-risk youth.

Dreamgirls is a Broadway musical, with music by Henry Krieger and lyrics and book by Tom Eyen. Based upon the show business aspirations and successes of R&B acts such as The Supremes, The Shirelles, James Brown, Jackie Wilson, and others,[1] the musical follows the story of a young female singing trio from Chicago, Illinois called “The Dreams”, who become music superstars. The musical opened on December 20, 1981 at the Imperial Theatre, and was nominated for thirteen Tony Awards, including the Tony Award for Best Musical, and won six. It was later adapted into a motion picture from DreamWorks and Paramount Pictures in 2006.

VERA J . KATZ (DIRECTOR) -has taught both acting and directing for 32 years at Howard University in the Department of Theatre Arts where she is a full-time, tenured Professor. She has directed more than 60 productions, originally working under the famed playwright-director-author, Moss Hart. She holds a BFA, in Theatre Arts from Brooklyn College, a WA in Directing and Acting from Boston University, and has studied Film at both the University of Southern California and the University of California/Extension. She won an award for directing the Best Production in Dundalk, Ireland’s International Festival.

She has taught such notables as Debbie Allen, Charles Brown, Phylicia Rashad, Clinton Turner Davis and Lynn Whitfield. She has taught acting workshops for such groups as Actor’s Center, Everyday Theatre, Serenity Players, Playwright’s Forum, Howard University Student Film Association, African Continuum Theatre Coalition, and Woolly Mammoth Theatre. She is an associate member of NCBI, a prejudice reduction organization, which produces leaders in cultural diversity, and she is a member of Operation Understanding: DC; which is dedicated to enlightening Black and Jewish youths about each other’s culture.

Professor Katz has been profiled in The Washington Post, The Village Voice, U.S. News & World Report, Baltimore Jewish Times, The Washington Jewish Week and Sister to Sister. She has been interviewed for a number of radio programs including National Public Radio’s Weekend Edition. Professor Katz has written numerous articles on Black Theatre for Black Masks for which she is a contributing editor. Her articles have been published in the Black American Literature Forum, Howard University’s New Directions, Studies in American Drama (Ohio State Press), Washington Review and the American Medical Journal of Education.

She is responsible for the establishment and the administration of the Dr. Andrew A. Allen Creative Arts Scholarship, funded by Debbie Allen and Phylicia Rashad for the Department of Theatre Arts. She appreciatively thanks Tom (her husband). Anita and Larrv (her children), Howard and Joy (their spouses), her 5 grandchildren and her steadfast girlfriends for their supportive nurturing and love.
